Your trips, expenses and receipts are stored only on your device. To help fix bugs and improve the App, it also collects usage data and records app sessions — recordings can show your trip names, participants and amounts, but never your receipt photos. You can turn this off at any time in Settings.
Overview
Trip Balance ("the App") is a mobile application for splitting group travel expenses. It has no backend, no user accounts and no cloud storage: everything you enter lives on your device. The one exception is the usage data and session recordings described below, which are sent to our analytics provider so we can find bugs and understand which parts of the App people struggle with.
Data Stored on Your Device
All data you enter — trips, expenses, participant names, receipt photos and settings — is stored locally using on-device storage. This data is:
- Never uploaded to a server by the App
- Never sold or shared with advertisers
- Deleted when you uninstall the App
Receipt photos never leave your device at all. They are not uploaded, and they are excluded from the session recordings described below.
Usage Data and Session Recordings
Unless you turn it off, the App sends the following to PostHog, our analytics provider:
- Usage events — which screens you open and which actions you take (for example, that a trip was created, or that an expense was added). These events record counts and categories only. They never contain trip names, participant names, notes or amounts.
- Session recordings — a visual reconstruction of your screen as you use the App, so we can see where the interface confuses people. These recordings show what is on screen, including trip names, participant names and expense amounts. Receipt photos and your device's photo library are never captured.
- Device and app information — device model, operating system version, app version, language and time zone.
- Crash and error reports — diagnostic information when the App crashes or hits an error, so it can be fixed.
- A random identifier generated on your device, used to group this activity into a session. It is not linked to your name, email or any account, and it is not shared with other apps.
This data is processed by PostHog on servers in the European Union.
Information About Other People
When you add participants to a trip, you enter their names and what they spent. Because session recordings capture what is on screen, that information can appear in a recording. Please keep this in mind when using the App with other people's details, and turn off "Usage data & recordings" in Settings if you would prefer their information never be captured.
How to Turn It Off
Open Settings in the App and switch off "Usage data & recordings". Nothing further is sent from that moment on, including session recordings. You can turn it back on at any time.
What We Do Not Do
- No advertising, ad networks or advertising identifiers (no IDFA)
- No tracking of you across other apps or websites
- No selling or sharing of your data with third parties
- No collection of your location, contacts or photo library
- No user accounts, logins or profiles on any server
Other Network Requests
The App fetches currency exchange rates from a public API. These requests contain no personal information and no device identifiers, are cached locally, and are optional — the App works fully offline with manually entered rates.
Purchases
Trip Balance Pro is a one-time purchase handled entirely by Apple. We never see or receive your payment details.
Your Rights
If you are in the European Economic Area or the UK, you have the right to access, correct or delete the data described above, and to object to its collection. The simplest way to object is the Settings switch. For access or deletion, email us and we will remove the usage data and session recordings associated with your device.
We rely on our legitimate interest in fixing bugs and improving the App as the legal basis for this processing.
Data Retention
Session recordings are kept for a limited period and then deleted automatically. Usage events and crash reports are retained for as long as they remain useful for improving the App.
Children's Privacy
The App is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child's information has been captured, contact us and we will delete it.
Changes to This Policy
If we update this policy, we will post the revised version on this page with an updated "Last updated" date.
